Casual racism is still racism

Casual racism, for those of you not aware, can be defined as a throwaway line that relies on negative stereotypes to say something about a person’s race or ethnicity. I can guarantee if you are Asian then you have heard it. It differs from traditional forms of racism because often it is used as a means to be humorous and not malicious but it is still fucking racism.

Here’s one you’ve probably heard at school if you are an Asian male:

“don’t fight him, dude, he is Asian, he probably knows Karate”.

Now it doesn’t sound nasty, I get that. But for those who think this isn’t unacceptable and unnecessary, you are missing the point. The fact that this line is muttered indicates that the person saying it has a pre-ingrained prejudice that they are using against you for the purpose of amusement. In other words, they are trying to get others to laugh at you. Not with you, AT you.

If this isn’t unacceptable behavior, then I don’t know what is. It is bad enough that racism against Asians in society doesn’t seem to be frowned upon in the same manner that racism towards other racist groups is. But if we continue to allow casual racism to pass through unchecked then it is something our children and our children’s children will have to live with throughout the years to come.

Let us stamp it out now.
